A life enriched by pen pal letters
At one point in her life, Judy Fenza, of Ottawa, was in correspondence with 15 pen pals from all over the world. Fenza's collections of letters are some of her most cherished possessions. "The simple act of writing letters and making friends changed my life and opened doors for me," she said.

Pass around green bean casserole, a Thanksgiving tradition
Pass around green bean casserole, a Thanksgiving tradition
While Reilly has said she doesn't remember how she came up with the recipe,  Americans seem to be happy she did. We love this casserole because it can be made a day ahead of time with three ingredients — cream of mushroom soup, frozen green beans and fried onions.

Adventure awaits in Starved Rock State Park's canyons
Adventure awaits in Starved Rock State Park's canyons
The wide open, 90-foot high St. Louis Canyon is a favorite for families. said Edna Daugherty, activities director at Starved Rock Lodge & Conference Center, as she looked over the crowd taking part in a recent guided hike.

Water rushed over the edge and splashed down onto the canyon floor as families stood nearby in awe and gathered together for group photos.

She recommended guests take the scenic route and travel to the canyon from the Lodge as the trails take visitors past many other canyons and scenic stops.

Too many turnovers for Bulldogs in opener
Too many turnovers for Bulldogs in opener
The Dixon Dukes were effective and efficient with their passing and, when they eventually got the ball in the paint, finished with two points more times than not.

The Streator Bulldogs struggled mightily in both those departments at the other end, and that more than anything led to Dixon besting the 'Dogs 54-35 in both teams' season opener Monday here in Ottawa's Dean Riley "Shootin' the Rock" Tournament. Streator (0-1) returns to Kingman Gym early this evening to play Metamora at 5 p.m.
